SO WHAT IS THE CHARLOTTE AREA FUND?

The Charlotte Area Fund (CAF) is a non-profit corporation and the designated community action agency serving the needs of the poor in Mecklenburg County. Since 1963, CAF has provided low-income citizens with a variety of programs which can help them become self-sufficient. Maintaining and getting ahead takes more than luck. CAF can teach you the skills you need. Whether you need help finding a job, learning how to stretch your income, or reducing your energy bill each month, CAF is here to help.

IS ANYONE ELIGIBLE FOR
THE PROGRAMS?

Since CAF receives State and Federal funds, you must meet certain income guidelines to receive services. Individuals seeking assistance or services from CAF must have a family income which does not exceed 100% (CSBG Programs) and 150% (DOE-Weatherization Programs) of the Federal poverty guidelines. These guidelines are revised each year and are as follows:

INCOME LIMIT

FAMILY SIZE
CSBG
DOE/SSP
One $ 8,980 $13,470
Two $11,940 $18,180
Three $15,020 $22,890
Four $18,100 $27,600

For families with more than 4 persons, add $3,140 (CSBG Programs); and $4,710 (Weatherization/HARRP & SSP Programs) for each additional member. (Revised 02/03)

To apply, bring proof of household income to our office. Household family members include anyone living with you who is related by birth, marriage or adoption. Proof of income may include paycheck stubs for the past 90 days or 12 months, award letters for TANF(AFDC), Social Security, SSI or Pension, Statement of Unemployment Benefits, ChildSupport/Alimony, self employment and any other earned funds.

If you do not have any of these verifications, obtain a benefit statement from the Employment Security Commission or a statement from your employers telling us how much you were paid in the last 12 months.
