Mr. B came to Charlotte Area Fund(CAF) in March 2018as a result of a conversation with a counselor at the Urban Ministries soup kitchen about his future goals. At the time he was unemployed and staying at the Charlotte Men’s Shelter, which is located two blocks and across the street from CAF. Mr. Bhad been clean from drugs for about 8 years and said that he was hesitant to walk the two blocks and cross Tryon Street, because he had to pass some of the people he knew from his drugging days that were sitting and hanging under the bridge. After completing the two-week Work Readiness program, Mr. Bwas immediately hiredby Amazon as a full-time merchandise scanner with a starting salary of $13.75 per hour. Timothy had previously gained skills as a forklift operator, but was not certified, this was his next goal. While at Amazon, he became eligible for benefits, earned his fork-lift certification and a salary increase. He was able to move from the men’s shelter into, into transitional housing and finally into his own apartment.
After a year at Amazon, Mr. B changed jobs for a better opportunity. He has been employed with Builders First Source for a year as a delivery driver and currently earns $18.00 per hour. Timothy is proud that he has been able to treat himself to a vacation in the Bahamas this year. His next goal is to get his CDL license to be able to drive a tractor trailer for his current employer.
Mr. B said that he is so glad that he didn’t let hesitation keep him from crossing Tryon Street to walk through the doors of the Charlotte Area Fund.
